About Your Guide

Dave Larkman is a professional photographer and experienced survival instructor who spent years working as a wilderness guide in northern British Colombia. His photography has won numerous awards and has appeared in galleries all across Canada.

In 2010, Dave was selected by Canadian Geographic for Best Wildlife Photography and his photos appears in  Canadian Geographics Special Edition Magazine for 2011. Dave has traveled Canada coast to coast capturing some of the most breathtaking images this beautiful country has to offer and he has now developed a variety of wildlife and scenic photography workshops for beginners to advanced photographers.

The workshops are done in smaller groups of 4 to 8 people ensuring that everyone will have proper instruction. His workshops will cover safety for both the photographer and the subject including how to find the animals, animal behavior and how to anticipate that great shot.  We will cover composition, lighting, depth of field, aperture settings, ISO, use of long lenses, proper tripod use, the use of flash and high speed flash with wildlife and anything else you would like to learn.

On our photo adventure tours you will also learn about the geology and unique history of the sites we visit along with information about the indigenous plant and wildlife species.

Algonquin Park - Moose and Scenic

On this unique field trip we will take you on a hike into scenic Algonquin, well known for its stunning beauty. Algonquin is Ontario's oldest Provincial Park. Established in 1893 as a wildlife sanctuary it covers 7630 square kilometers of land and waterways. A vast interior of maple hills, rocky ridges, and thousands of lakes, forests, bogs, rivers, cliffs and beaches. The only way to explore the interior of this park is by canoe or on foot. As we walk the trails this outdoor adventure  gives you a multitude of  opportunities to photograph the scenery and wildlife in their natural habitat and will included moose, reptiles, large variety of bird species and more.

This outing we will cover proper tripod use, long lens use, dealing with low light conditions, moose calling, landscape photography, bird photography, use of flash and anything else you can think of.

You will need a tripod and a camera that has manual settings. I would recommend at least a 300mm lens or a camera with 8x to 12x zoom. I would also recommend bringing a pen and notepad so you can take notes and record your camera settings for future use.

We will meet at the Mizzy Lake Trail parking lot at 12:30pm. From there we will take a short drive to another trail head and there is about a 2 km easy hike into the swamps. We will be out shooting until dusk so pack a dinner and bring some water. Also bring some bread for the Whiskey Jacks. This workshop will go rain or shine so dress for the weather.

Trail of Broken Dreams - Scenic, Historic

Come and join us as we travel the scenic and historic Hastings Colonization Road. The road was constructed in the mid 1850's to encourage settlers to move northward into the central region of the province. The land was very rocky and not good for farming. Many of the settlers left after trying to scrape out a meager living in these harsh conditions, and the towns have faded away. The label “Trail of Broken Dreams” was given to this colonization road by Ontario Land Surveyor C.F. Alysworth in 1925. We will stop and photograph the pioneer cemeteries and the remains of old towns that used to exist along the road. This beautiful  scenic journey takes you through trees that have formed a tunnel overhead as the road winds it's way through the Precambrian moss covered rock, there are some century old bridges, and we will stop at Beaver Creek to photograph Jelly Rapids which disappears beneath the rock and reappears about 30 feet downstream.

In this workshop we will provide a brief history of the different sites that we will be visiting and of course we will also cover all aspects of landscape  photography, the fall colors should be spectacular. There is a lot to see along this road especially with the fall colors so we will leave the ending time open. It will be at least a  minimum of 5 hours.

You will need a tripod and a camera that has manual settings. Bring a notebook to record your camera settings and also to record the names of the places we visit.
