Code of Ethics

When I'm out in the field I always follow a code of ethics. The last thing I want to do is disturb or endanger the animals I am photographing.

            1)      Always put the animals well being first. When an animal changes it’s behavior you are too close.

            2)      Take only pictures and leave only footprints.

      3)      Always respect landowners and their rules.

      4)      Remember with larger animals that they can be unpredictable. Don’t get too close and have an escape route.

      5)      Never disturb or modify the environment to the extent it cannot be immediately fixed. (eg. Never break branches or trample grasses to get a shot)

      6)      Never loiter in the area. Get your shots and get out without disturbing the animal.

      7)      Give nesting or denning animals a wide berth.

      8)      Never use a flash at night with an animal that is actively hunting. ( it can cause the animal to lose it’s night vision for awhile and could cost the animal  it’s  dinner.)

      9)      Never force an action. ( eg. Never force a bird to take flight.)

      10)  Never bait an animal. You do not want it to become dependent on humans for food. ( the exception to this one is  backyard bird feeders.)

      11)  Respect the rights and space of other photographers, nature watchers, birders etc…

      12) Take the time to answer any questions and educate others.
